Did you know? According to road safety experts, a correctly fitted car seat can reduce the risk of death in an accident by up to 70% and serious injury by up to 80%. Yet, many South African children still travel without proper restraints.

That’s why it’s vital to follow South Africa’s road safety rules for child passengers:
Car Seats are Non-Negotiable
By law, all children under 3 years old must be strapped into a suitable car seat. Beyond the age of 3, children should still be safely buckled in, preferably in an appropriate booster seat until they’re tall enough to use the seatbelt correctly.
Back Seat is Best
Children under 12 should ride in the back seat. Airbags and front-seat impacts can cause serious injuries to little ones.
Buckle Up, Every Time
Even on short trips, always ensure your child’s seatbelt or harness is properly secured.
No Laps, No Exceptions
It may be tempting to hold your child on your lap, but in the event of a collision, this is extremely dangerous.
Check Your Car Seat
Make sure your car seat is SABS-approved, correctly installed, and appropriate for your child’s height and weight.
